![]() You have 3 “slime slots”, which function similarly to the Defect’s orb slots. You start with the Slime Boss, one of the bosses of Act 1, and his cards revolve around splitting into and absorbing smaller slimes. So let’s run through the baddies and how they play. ![]() The sheer amount of content in seven playable characters alone is astonishing for a fan-made expansion, and when I saw this for myself I was stunned. Downfall features not three, not five, but seven playable monsters, all based on the foes you would find inside the Spire, and they all play completely differently. In it, you play as a denizen of the Spire, and your goal is to descend the Spire to stop any would-be heroes from defeating the Spire’s Heart. However, while Hermit is an incredibly fun character, the meat of this mod is its brand new game mode, the titular Downfall mode. The character feels fleshed out enough to the point where they could be base game, even featuring unlocks as you level up, and I can see myself firing up Downfall every so often to unlock a higher ascension level on Hermit. Cards’ Dead-On effects activate when a card is played from the middle of his hand, leaving it up to the luck of the draw and your skill as a player. The Hermit, this mod’s new character, is a gunslinger from a faraway place, and playing him requires another layer of strategy in the order in which you play cards with his new effect: Dead-On. While there may not have been a lot to say about the presentation, the gameplay is absolutely where this mod shines. Similarly, character designs also mesh beautifully with the existing artstyle to the point where they feel like they were made by Megacrit themselves. Card artwork, when not using edited versions of existing card art (which does manage to fit perfectly and not feel lazy), still manages to be on par with the base game’s artwork. That ends this week though, as I took a look at Downfall, a fan-made mod that adds not only a new character but an entirely new game mode as well! Presentationįrom the very title screen, Downfall lets you know that it’s installed and ready for you, modifying the usual Slay The Spire title screen and even playing a sort of rock version of the battle theme. However, through all of this playtime, I neglected to do much looking into the extensive list of mods on the Workshop. Blending card game and roguelike mechanics and creating one of the most satisfying gameplay loops I’ve seen in a long while, I’ve put over 200 hours into it across PC and Switch. Slay the Spire is one of my favorite games of all time, if you haven’t checked it out, I’d recommend it a million times over.
